L'idioma anglès admet la possibilitat d'expressar les idees afirmant alguna cosa o negant el contrari. Per això es val de construccions gramaticals que denoten negació, I de manera bastant simple una oració que a priori és enunciativa i que comunica alguna cosa de manera positiva pot modificar-se de manera tal que indiqui el mateix o gairebé el mateix de manera negativa.
Les oracions amb negació verbal típicament requereixen dels verbs auxiliars to do / to be / to have, I es construeixen de manera similar a les interrogatives, però esmentant el pronom de persona en primer terme i després l'auxiliar, que portarà la terminació "not" (are not, is not, do not, doesn't , didn't), totes aquestes formes abreujades el negatiu "not". En el futur es produeix un canvi major: "will" passa a ser "will not" o "will not".
Pel que fa a oracions negatives per estructures negatives no verbals, aquestes típicament apareixen en el subjecte amb pronoms negatius, Encara que també poden afectar el verb en forma d'adverbis o d'objectes directes.
Pronoms com 'nobody', 'no one' o 'nothing' fan que una oració afirmativa es pugui tornar negativa: 'Nobody has seen him' significa 'ningú ho ha vist'. De la mateixa manera, una oració positiva com 'I have seen him' (jo ho he vist) es torna negativa quan se la transforma en 'I have never seen him' (jo mai ho he vist).
Finalment, dir 'they know' vol dir 'ells saben', però agregar 'they know nothing ' significa 'ells no saben res', transformant-la també en negativa. És interessant fer notar que en l'anglès no s'usa la doble negació, Que sí s'usa en certs casos en espanyol (per exemple: No va venir ningú a la conferència).
