Els verbs auxiliars que permeten formar negatius en els diferents temps verbals són: be, do, have i will.

Hi verbs que no necessiten auxiliars per formar la negació en present, que són els verbs to be, can, to have got.

Per formar els negatius també poden utilitzar-se els verbs modals, és a dir aquells que assenyalen la capacitat o possibilitat de realitzar una acció: should (Hauria), could (Podria), must (Ha), might (Potser).

Per exemple:

• You should study.
• You should not study.

En afirmatiu, s'utilitza l'expressió de quantitat "some" (algun, una mica de) i els seus derivats com "somebody" (algú) o "something" (alguna cosa). No obstant això, a el passar a la negació, s'utilitza "any".

exemple:

• I put some milk in my tea. / Li poso una mica de llet al meu te.
• I do not put any milk in my tea. / No li poso llet al meu te.
