existeixen tres formes d'utilitzar "used to" en anglès, Amb significats diferents. És comú confondre-les, tot i que transmeten idees completament diferents, per això és important comprendre la forma en què s'utilitzen.

Used to: hàbits en passat

Per expressar hàbits d'una persona o grup s'utilitza l'expressió "used to". Aquesta expressió pot traduir-se com "solia" o "acostumava".

Subjecte + used to + verb en infinitiu sense "to"

Aquesta estructura sol estar acompanyada d'un complement circumstancial de temps.

When I was a child, I used to watch a lot of televisió. (Quan era nen, solia mirar molta televisió.)

La negació es construeix com qualsevol altra oració en anglès:

Subjecte + did not / did not + use to + verb en infinitiu sense "to"

When I was a child, I did not use to watch a lot of televisió. (Quan era nen, no solia mirar molta televisió.)

La interrogació també pren la forma habitual de el passat:

Did + subjecte + use to + verb en infinitiu sense "to"

Did you used to watch a lot of television es a child?(Acostumaves mirar molta televisió quan eres nen?)

També s'utilitza per expressar estats anteriors de persones o objectes.

This used to be a popular pub.(Aquest solia ser un bar popular.)

Be used to: estar acostumat

Per expressar l'estar acostumat s'utilitza "used to" al costat de l'verb "to be" tant en present com en passat o en futur.

Subjecte + verb to be conjugat + used to + gerundi / objecte

He 's used to getting up early. / Està acostumat a aixecar d'hora.

We are used to the noise. / Estem acostumats a el soroll.

Get used to: acostumar

Assenyala el procés d'acostumar en lloc de el fet de ja estar acostumat.

El verb que es conjuga és "get" mentre que "used to" roman invariable en els diferents temps verbals.
