Les "yes / no questions" són preguntes que només accepten respostes de "sí" o "no".
L'oposat són les wh- questions, és a dir, aquelles preguntes que comencen amb adverbis i pronoms interrogatius: who, how, what, when, etc. Les wh- questions (també anomenades "preguntes informatives") requereixen més informació i no poden ser respostes només amb "sí" o "no".
exemple:
- Yes / no question: Did you meet John today? / Et vas trobar amb John avui?
- Wh- question: Who did you meet today? / Amb qui et vas trobar avui?

Amb verb auxiliar do (Present i passat simple)
- Do you like this shirt? / T'agrada aquesta camisa?
- Does he play the piano? / ¿Toca el piano?
- Did you see the movie? / Has vist la pel·lícula?
- Did I do something wrong? / ¿Vaig fer una cosa dolenta?
- Do they always menja here? / Sempre vénen aquí?
- Does Sarah know the address? / ¿Sarah coneix la direcció?
Amb verb principal to be: En present i passat, quan el verb principal és to be, no cal un verb auxiliar.
- Are you happy? / Ets feliç?
- Is she at home? / Està ella a casa?
- Was the party a lot of fun? / Va ser molt divertida la festa?
- Were you sure about the answer? / Estaves segur de la resposta?
- Were they ready for the Tripo? / ¿Estaven a punt per al viatge?
- Am I too short? / Sóc massa baix?
- Was the hotel nice? / Era agradable l'hotel?
Amb verb auxiliar to be: Present continuous i past continuous
- Are you thinking what I'ma thinking? / Estàs pensant el que estic pensant?
- Were they playing guitar? / ¿Estaven tocant la guitarra?
- Were the children screaming too loud? / ¿Els nens estaven cridant molt fort?
- Is she feeling alright? / ¿Ella s'està sentint bé?
- Are they coming with us? / ¿Estan venint amb nosaltres?
- Was I speaking too loud? / ¿Estava parlant massa fort?
Amb verb auxiliar will: S'utilitza per fer preguntes yes / no en temps futur
- Will you pick up the children from school? / ¿Aniràs a buscar els nens a l'escola?
- Will they be ready on time? / ¿Estaran llestos a temps?
- Will he talk to the boss today? / Parlarà amb el cap avui?
- Will we visit Italy? / ¿Visitarem Itàlia?
Amb verb auxiliar have: Present perfect
- Have you seen this show? / Has vist aquest programa?
- Have they ever worked together before? / Han treballat junts alguna vegada?
- Has he been to Japan? / Ha estat al Japó?
- Have I told you this story before? / Et he explicat aquesta història abans?
- Have you written many books? / Has escrit molts llibres?
Amb verb modal should: Preguntar una obligació o demanar instruccions
- Should I use this paint for an outdoor table? / ¿Hauria utilitzar aquesta pintura per a una taula d'exterior?
- Should we finish the test in an hour? / Hauríem acabar l'examen en una hora?
- Should they believe him? / Haurien creure?
- Should we leave now to be there on time? / ¿Hauríem de sortir ara per arribar a temps?
Amb verb modal should: Preguntar una obligació
- Must the dog be tied all the time? / ¿El gos ha d'estar lligat tot el temps?
- Must we take off our shoes? / Hem de treure'ns les sabates?
- Must you study a lot? / ¿Has estudiar molt?
- Must he pay all these Taxes? / ¿Ha de pagar tots aquests impostos?
Amb verb modal can: Preguntar sobre l'habilitat i / o possibilitat de fer alguna cosa
- Can the children go to the park? / Poden anar els nens a parc?
- Can you setembre the table? / Pots preparar la taula?
- Can he run very fast? / ¿Pot córrer molt ràpid?
- Can the cat eat regular food? / El gat pot menjar menjar regular?
